KOUMBI CITY Ghana
Koumbi City — a greenfield development in the Dawhenya • Afienya • Shai (DAS) triangle — is the next phase of large-scale planned urban development in Greater Accra-Tema (pop. 3mil).
The city is set to emerge as a complex system of layered commercial, retail, agricultural, educational and residential spaces and interactions.
This complex process of urban development is possible because it integrates something simple: the individual efforts of myriad homeowners, property developers, agriculturalists, SME’s, companies, institutions and organizations, assisted by relevant authorities, planning agencies and a Koumbi City management company.
Guiding the organic process of building communities in clusters can both foster civic engagement and deepen citizens’ stake in Ghana’s democracy, through increased homeownership and better managed shared services.
Koumbi City networks individual efforts to better coordinate their development activity over time, and to demonstrate public-private utility models for improved road maintenance and supply of water and electricity.
